August 5, Tuesday, 4:00 p.m. - The Friends Board meets monthly to discuss upcoming events.  Interested members are encouraged to come and help us as we strive to fulfill our mission to support the needs of the library, to increase library usage and to expand the cultural and educational options in Bartlett.

August 19, Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. - The True Account:  A Novel of the Lewis and Clark & Kinneson Expeditions by Howard Frank Mosher.  Presenter, Marianne Barowski, will be personally following this expedition trail and won't be back in time for the second Tuesday of the month - we know you'll find it worthwhile to wait until August 19.


The Humanities Council will provide discussion leaders during September, October and November:

October 14 - TASTE OF DEATH by PD James; Presenter: Ingrid Graff
November 11- I'M A STRANGER HERE MYSELF by Bill Bryson; Presenter: Frumie Selchin

ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP DRIVE.  It's never too late to renew or join the Friends to support your local library.  You may renew/join when utilizing the library or by sending a check made out to the Friends of the Bartlett Library.  Memberships for 2008 are:   Individual $15.00, Family $25, Business $35, Patron $50+.  We have had a response rate of 20%  and hope to get closer to 50%. 

Jean has purchased an Internet based library hosted by OverDrive.  Watch for information regarding this Audio Book Digital Library that will allow you to download books at home.  Come to the library to obtain your new 14-digit number.

The 2007 spring Humanities program, reading to the Sunbridge Care for North Conway, Wayne Gould explained his development of Sudoku, Gaye Gould presented 3 film versions of Jane Erye, Donald Graves Poetry Reading.

July 8, - The Man Who Would be King
by Rudyard Kipling - was presented to a large gathering by Gaye Gould.

July 4 - Our best fundraiser ever!!
The Book and Bake Sale from 9-2  generated $625.00, almost doubling previous efforts.  Thanks to the many members who helped. 
  

June 10 at 6:30 PM 4th Annual Friends Meeting included recognition to Jean Garland for 55+ years of service to the Bartlett community!

June 10, -
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini,  revolved around the horror of Afghanistan women who find a way to survive and go on. It provided an interesting topic for our group of 10 American women to discuss. 

May 13, DAWNLAND ENCOUNTERS by Colin G. Calloway.   Humanities Council Stanley Howe discussed encounters of Indians and Europeans in northern New England.

At a special meeting on April 24,
35 "friends" were entertained by Jane English presenting, OUR MOUNTAIN TRIPS - 1899-1908.

April 8,  THREE CUPS OF TEA:  ONE MAN'S MISSION TO PROMOTE PEACE. . ONE SCHOOL AT A TIME by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin.  Gordan Mann joined us to provide his personal experiences trekking in Pakistan.  A lively group of 12.

March 11, THE BOOK THIEF by Marku ZusakA lively group discussed this moving tribute to a young girl who survived the holocaust.

February, THE ROAD by Cormac McCarthy.   Julie King led a discussion with 8 members in attendance.  Very Interesting!

January, WATER FOR ELEPHANTS by Sara Gruen.  Intimate discussion led by Jackie Hamblett.  Fantastic Book.
